Riding the Blue Wave: 5 Hot Navy Blazers

I get it — you’re a fashion aficionado. You read all the fashion blogs and have a keen eye for what’s trending in men’s fashion. But I am sure that, just like me, sometimes you find it rather hard to translate that new fashion trend into your everyday life. I mean, let’s face it, Asians and South Asians are not usually the target audience in the very fashion magazines we read. That’s where I come in. My name is Shao Yang, and I am the Lead Stylist for A Suit That Fits. I am not just going to discuss fashion but also talk about fashion that works for you!

So, what’s the first discussion on my agenda? Well, let me ask you this: What is the one staple piece of garment every post-graduate man needs to have in his wardrobe? If you guessed the navy blazer, then you are right on! From single-breasted with gold buttons or double-breasted with wide-peak lapels, from cottons and tweeds to cashmeres with details like white nautical piping to hand craft stitching to patch pockets — the navy blazer is not only a classic, but it’s also what’s trending for Spring. There’s a new breed of navy jackets among us, and I’ve scoured the entire men’s fashion world to bring to you five top favorites and how they can work for you. I promise, they will be anything but boring navy essentials.

1. Nautical Red, White & Blue

The classic gold button navy blazer is getting a twist with eye catching details such as white accents and sleeve detailing. Add a hint of red into the mix with your tie/pocket square, or if you’re daring enough, maybe in the jacket detailing itself. What’s so great about a navy blazer is it’s versatility.

Depending on how you wear it, it can easily take you from day into evening, weekday to weekend and it works well with all skin tones and colorings. Think statement making details like the ones in these blazers.

2. Bright Blue Hue

The color navy we are so accustomed to is getting just a tad bright and how perfect—this bright hue works in perfect harmony with darker complexions. So, take some fashion cues here, and don’t be afraid to go brighter next time.

3. Not Your Grandfather’s Double-Breasted

Yes, it’s true — believe it. The double-breasted jacket is trending in fashion, but don’t worry—it’s getting a total revamp! Unlike what you are used to seeing on your grandfather, the double-breasted jacket of today is more fitted, much shorter and definitely a fashion statement maker. The key to making the double-breasted work for you is making sure the jacket tapers at your waist and sits above your seat.

4. Nutty About the Professor

What used to be regarded as old-fashioned and Mr. Rogers-like, the elbow patch is getting a makeover. Making an appearance in everything cool and relevant, the elbow patch is making a comeback with new textures, shades, and fabrication and it is definitely here to stay.

5. A Little Bit of Night for Day

Shawl lapels, grosgrain and satin are no longer reserved just for evening dressing. A new breed of blazers are incorporating evening detailing into their make-up. The idea of mixing black and navy use to be a fashion faux pas but now, the juxtaposition of these two colors are synonymous with being smart and modern. This ultra chic navy blazer pays homage to the classic tuxedo by adding black satin peak lapels. Pair this look with a white shirt and some denim, and you are sure ready to rock the town!
